Nance - A family name, believed derived from Nantes, a location in Normandy from which a Norman general came during the Norman invasion of England in the eleventh century. The Normans did not use a family name, but the English did, and the general, coming from Nantes, altered it to form the name Nance to use as his family name. The first name of the general is not given. (N2-8) Another source, The History of Saint Ives, etc., by Matthews, claims that the name Nance derived from the Cornish word nans, a valley. (N7-14)

Nance, General - First name unknown. A general for William, Duke of Normandy, during the Norman Conquest of England in 1066. Settled in Padstow, Cornwall, England. Originally he had no family name, according to Norman custom, but the English by custom had family names.
